Podolia, in case you don't know, is close to Moldova, in the Balkans. It's the home of Konsonans Retro, a band whose music reflects the ethnic mix of the area -- Moldovan, Gypsy, Russian, Ukrainian, and Jewish. It makes for a bit of a pan-Balkan stew. There's plenty of brass in the sound, with trumpets, tuba, and trombone, along with drums, accordion, clarinet, and sax. But they're more than a typical wedding band, although they fulfill that role well. Several of the pieces are rare Jewish material from Baranovsky family repertoire, like "Zagnitkiver Sher" and "Khasitsky Freylekhs." Along with those you'll find horas and doinas so typical of the region. It's good stuff, if not as stirring as other groups, lacking something in the punch and dynamics to really make the disc stand out from the Balkan pack.
