After seven months in jail for racketeering, Gunna entered a guilty plea on one charge -- while maintaining his innocence -- and was granted his release. A Gift & A Curse, his fourth album, followed half-a-year later in response to the time he lost and the public and private fallout he experienced after he took the deal. Somber if resilient pre-album track "Bread & Butter" set the table with his own accusations of betrayal -- associates and contemporaries had distanced themselves from him, claiming he sold out the still-incarcerated Young Thug. Gunna's situation informs most of the tracks on the YSL-issued A Gift & A Curse, though the rapper's exterior remains tough, his demeanor cool, and he doesn't get into specifics. The few tracks that aren't in some way aggrieved -- the lean "Fukumean" is a highlight -- retain the shrugging boastfulness for which Gunna is known. Context and a bold lack of featured artists lend a sense of solitary unease that differentiates these exploits from those recounted in his earlier output.
