The prestigious German record label ECM has long been responsible for many musical discoveries, uncovering both composers and the unique perspectives of performers, each carefully handpicked by Manfred Eicher and his visionary team across classical, contemporary, and European jazz genres.
It is in this exhilarating vein that we encounter this new album, dedicated to six South African composers whose works for string quartet span over 80 years. These compositions are rooted as deeply in the traditions of the Xhosa and Zulu communities as they are shaped by the legacy and innovation of Western music.
A Dark Flaring marks the Signum Quartett’s return to ECM following a series of acclaimed recordings, presenting music inspired as much by the American minimalists as by the composers of the English Renaissance.
