Portugal. The Man tinha um ritmo muito prolífico de lançamentos. Mas entre Evil Friends (2013) e Woodstock (2017) foram quatro anos, algo inédito até então para a banda. A demora é justificável: o álbum foi praticamente gravado duas vezes após a banda decidir descartar um disco pronto e começar tudo novamente. Woodstock foi gravado com a colaboração de Mike D dos Beastie Boys, o produtor Danger Mouse e os antigos parceiros do conjunto, John Hill e Casey Bates. Além deles, foram nove engenheiros de som e mais de 20 músicos e cantores convidados. O resultado foi um disco muito heterogêneo que navegou por diferentes vertentes das músicas alternativas. Há explorações na neo-psicodelia, no R&B, no rock, mas também muito do passado indie da banda. Mesmo com tantas experimentações, a banda aumentou seu lado pop comercial, especialmente no single "Feel It Still", o maior hit do grupo até este lançamento.
