Produzido depois da gradual troca da influência do blues pelo rock pesado, 1987 equilibra baladas e petardos, rendendo ao Whitesnake entrada franca às paradas musicais dos Estados Unidos. Lançado em alguns países como álbum autointitulado, ele troca a produção do fiel Martin Birch por Mike Stone (Asia, Journey) e Keith Olsen (Sammy Hagar, Santana) e contém alguns dos maiores sucessos do grupo. Dentre as roqueiras, “Here I Go Again” (recuperada de Saints and Sinners e “aditivada”) e “Still of the Night”, primeiro single do disco, servem de mostruário da guitarra incisiva de John Sykes e dos vocais dramáticos. O novo direcionamento criativo também fica patente em baladas como “Is This Love” e “Looking for Love”. Grande êxito internacional, certificado com 4 Discos de Platina nos EUA já em 1987, o álbum também marca um ponto de ruptura da banda, com a saída de todos os integrantes exceto David Coverdale.
