There are many available recordings of Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht, Op. 4, written for string sextet and later orchestrated by the composer, but this version of the orchestral work by the BBC Symphony under the baton of Edward Gardner has a fresh twist. It takes into account that although Verklärte Nacht is an instrumental work, it is rooted in a poem, written by Richard Dehmel in 1896, and quite a controversial thing in its time with its dramatic scene of a man coming to terms with the fact that the child with which his lover is pregnant is not his own. The Schoenberg work has rarely, if ever, been paired with a duo vocal setting of the poem by Oskar Fried, a contemporary of Schoenberg and an admirer of Mahler who later conducted the first recording of a Mahler symphony in the 1920s. The presence of the Fried work, nicely sung by tenor Stuart Skelton and mezzo-soprano Christine Rice, brings out the directly programmatic nature of Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht, even if (or especially because) Schoenberg makes different decisions concerning the swirling psychological undercurrents of the text. Chandos backs Gardner's plan with its track division, reflecting the distinct sections of the work. The Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht itself is very strong, at once precise and lush, and it is enhanced further by the presence of other orchestral songs, one of them by, of all people, Franz Léhar; it is a grim tale of a hospitalized soldier and his thoughts. The album closes with the Abschiedslieder, Op. 14, of Erich Korngold, written in the early 1920s; it is more tonally oriented than the other works but still of a piece with them. This is something of a deep dive into Schoenberg and his Viennese world, of great interest to any lover of Schoenberg's great debut tone poem. Booklet notes by Paul Griffiths, also available online, are an added attraction.
