Being one of the best alto saxophonists of his generation has never been quite enough for Pierrick Pédron. The Breton has always embarked with his singular breath upon equally unique paths. For over fifteen years Pédron has dabbled in rock, pop, funk, world, psychedelic, etc. With Unknown, he releases a ninth album right between post-bop and pre-free, produced with his old accomplice and bassist Thomas Bramerie, drummer Greg Hutchinson and pianist Carl-Henri Morisset, without omitting the fifth man of the crew, pianist Laurent de Wilde for artistic direction. This return to acoustic jazz with a traditional quartet is a reminder of how great a storyteller the saxophonist can be. In a ballad like Mum’s Eyes, the purity of his breath is sublime. As impressive as his complicity with his rhythmic orchestra. And since this is a Pierrick Pédron album, he didn’t forget to include, right between eight original compositions, a surprising and unexpected interpretation of… Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode! © MD/Qobuz
