MGMT have had kids in the Antipodes. Australian group San Cisco, made up of Jordi Davieson (vocals, guitar), Josh Biondillo (vocals, guitar), and Scarlett Stevens (drums, vocals) openly cite the American duo as a major influence. The Flaming Lips and Vampire Weekend aren't far off, either. With their sunny pop songs, San Cisco envision the world as a sort of emotional figure-eight, like on the track "High," which describes the highs and lows of being in love, as well as the masks we tend to put on for the one we love when we lack self-confidence. Recorded in Los Angeles and in the Australian city of Fremantle, Under the Light is the perfect example of the kind of low-fi pop that happily marries electro elements (the dreamy layers of "Summer Days"), garage ("One Percent"), and house music ("Honeycomb"), the whole thing swimming in an ocean of positive energy and openness. Although not particularly original, the ensemble shines for a sort of fresh-spiritedness that makes San Cisco a key headliner of music festivals around the globe. It’s also worth noting, it's the producer of Californian musician Cuco that's at the helm of this record. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
