Clean shaven with the face of a fallen angel, we all suspected that Slowthai had a punk spirit sleeping inside of him, and we finally get to see fully awakened on his third album: Ugly. It is a sort of dirty yet hypersensitive release which borrows more from 2000s British rock than from today’s rap music. Unlike the 2021 album Tyron, on which Slowthai showed himself in a melancholic and determined light, here he is shouting, crying, exposing the harshness of his childhood, all whilst paying tribute to the women in his family who raised him. The term “therapy album”, admittedly, is overused, but in this case its use completely justified. The rapper uses the "Coué method" on the single Feel Good, trying to convince himself that he's fine, whilst reenacting teenage arguments by imitating the voices of real people on Fuck It Puppet; something that a Slim Shady era Eminem would definitely not have sniffed at. Ugly puts the proverbial foot in its mouth; more cathartic than aesthetic, it tarnishes everything in its path. It is enjoyable and disturbing, albeit in a good way. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
