A carreira da banda escocesa Simple Minds começou nos anos 70, mas o reconhecimento e a grande fama só vieram com os discos Sparkle in The Rain (1984) e Once Upon a Time (1985). Street Fighting Years foi o primeiro álbum de inéditas do conjunto após a explosão da fama. Ao contrário do que seria natural, o grupo não repetiu a fórmula do sucesso. O álbum veio com uma atmosfera mais sombria e muitas letras politicamente carregadas. Tal movimento fez com que o trabalho não alcançasse o êxito comercial. Mas mesmo sem ter refrões pegajosos ou hits, Street Fighting Years é capaz de atrair os ouvintes. O disco é versátil: há momentos de rock, como em "Wall of Love", e baladas lentas, como "Let It All Come Down", mas a maioria das faixas é dramática e composta por melodias suaves, como na música título.
