Repeated, obligatory childhood listening to the booming sounds of John Williams clearly traumatised, or rather influenced, Buzzy Lee aka Sasha Spielberg... The first real album from the artist formerly known as "the daughter of" has risen up quietly. It leans towards intimate, chamber-music pop. A beautiful, dreamlike record designed with the electro prodigy Nicolas Jaar. Jaar has been a studio-mate of Spielberg's since college days. He has found the perfect setting to foreground the 30-year-old Californian's elfin voice. Here, that voice takes on echoes of contemporaries like Lana Del Rey, Agnes Obel, and Este, Danielle and Alana Haim. Everything on Spoiled Love is very polished. But it is its roughness that gives the record its bewitching power. For example, in the middle of Strange Town, Jaar lets a dreamy synthetic sound float down, creating a slightly strange feeling. Or indeed, the repetitive instrumental interlude of Mendonoma. These small touches give a Lynchian colour to this magical album. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
