Marc-André Hamelin and other top-level pianists have played some of the thousands of piano compositions written for the left hand alone, and a number of players have turned to this repertoire after losing the use of the right hand in one way or another. Nicholas McCarthy, however, is apparently the first pianist born with only one hand to become prominent. Solo is an attractive recital, well recorded by Warner Classics' Parlophone division and aimed squarely at the middle of the road. McCarthy draws on a variety of arrangements dating back as far as Liszt's time, avoiding such standards of the genre as Brahms' transcription of the Bach Chaconne in favor of tunes ingeniously placed amidst figuration that surrounds the vocal line. What you get is an album that has a bit less razzle-dazzle than others in the field, but that is more listenable to those wanting a pleasant hour of melodies. The group of opera aria arrangements at the beginning (sample any one of these), one of them by McCarthy himself, is especially effective, and McCarthy has charisma to burn. An enjoyable release that is unlike others of its type.
