In the mid-'90s, gangsta rap was showing no signs of decreasing in popularity. Unfortunately, the style hadn't changed much since the late '80s, and quite a few gangsta releases sounded extremely tired and clichéd. One painfully obvious example is Setripn' Bloccstyle by Mr. Doctor, a California MC whose style was influenced by Snoop Doggy Dogg. The melodic, keyboard-driven tracks, most of them produced by Sacramento rapper Brotha Lynch Hung, are decent, and Mr. Doctor's flow isn't bad. But his raps on gang violence in "the hood" and smoking "the chronic" (strong marijuana) are about as unoriginal as hip-hop gets. What Doctor does throughout this forgettable CD had been done countless times before, and he brings no new or interesting insights to the table. Lynch Hung raps on four tunes, but his cameos aren't nearly as interesting as the twisted "horror rap" he delivered on his own album, Season of da Siccness.
