Opener "Suffer Debt" perfectly encapsulates Truth Club's milieu. Each encyclopedic riff reminds you of a band you can almost remember until Truth Club jarringly move on. They display the whole of their prowess on the track before stretching what they've introduced over the course of 11 more songs. What remains in the sluice is a near-perfect set of relics repurposed for a new sound. Off-kilter indie rock origins, post-punk caterwauling, punk's origins, space rock, and psych all lurk in "Suffer Debt" only to evolve as the record continues. Straightforward punk arrives by the third track, the loud and powerful "Blue Eternal." Meandering original-era indie rock takes the wheel on "77x" which devolves into a long, gorgeous outro before "Clover" starts easy and builds to a '90s-era space rock climax. Songs wander politely around structures—introduced riffs can just as easily go on forever as they could form into a verse and chorus. Calls-and-responses break out in the excellent "Exit Cycle," eschewing the need for structure. Like actual truth, structure is irrelevant: many things can coexist to be true so explaining an action is just as cruel as the action itself. Running From the Chase is dynamic as a whole if meandering in parts. Carefully placed, each song reveals a bit more of the talent behind Truth Club—a formidable mix of styles and substance that shapeshifts effortlessly. It is a sophomore masterpiece with more bite than any references to other bands seemingly provide. By the time "Is It Working?" orders us to "Course correct/ This heart to stone" it no longer matters what influences the record. You've been influenced. © Jeff Laughlin/Qobuz
