Student of the famous Zakhar Bron, German violinist Niklas Liepe purposefully steers from the trodden path with an album that pairs works by English composer Rachel Portman with a rewritten version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons that is nothing like the original! Rachel Portman began her career by writing for made-for-TV movies on the BBC before composing film scores, going on to become the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Film Score for Douglas McGrath’s Emma, based on the Jane Austen novel. She composed Tipping Points especially for Niklas Liepe, the six movement suite intended to bring awareness to the climate crisis and the alarming realities that our planet and its inhabitants are facing because of it. Her music adheres to a simple, lyrical style that is just as inspired by Mozart, Schubert, and Brahams, as it is by Ennio Morricone and John Williams. It’s this very same concern for the environment that incited Niklas Liepe to commission a new version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons from German composer, arranger, conductor, and jazz musician Wolf Kerschek. Although initially hesitant about altering Vivaldi’s famous score, he finally agreed to arrange it for symphonic orchestra, creating an ambiance that he describes as “cinematic.” This rearrangement may not have been entirely necessary, but it is nevertheless tasteful and rather subtle, adhering to the same concern for modernity that Mozart had in orchestrating Handel’s Messiah so as to update it for the tastes of the day. The same can be said for Mendelssohn in altering Bach’s St Matthew Passion in order to recreate it, Mahler in reorchestrating Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, or even Hans Zender in orchestrating Schubert’s Winter Journey in 1993. Once in a while, it’s quite nice to open the windows and let some fresh air into the often stifling world of classical music. © François Hudry/Qobuz
