It seems that no-one is in any doubt that the Pietro Antonio dalla Costa violin used for this recording was indeed owned by Mozart, judging by its diverse series of successive owners: and so, as far as possible (because the strings and the bow are another story), we will hear what Mozart heard when he played his own works on his violin. The duo of Esther Hoppe and Florian Birsak doesn't go as far as using Mozart's piano, but at least Birsak plays a fortepiano (from a rather later era, to go by its sound), in order to give the proceedings the most authentic flavour possible. Alongside Mozart, our compères also give us three sonatas by Schubert, "juvenile" works, if that can be said of a young man of 19, who, in 1816, already had over 200 hundred works under his belt, including a serious number of immortal masterpieces.
