When listening to Albéniz’s Concierto fantástico for piano and orchestra, written and created in 1887 – the first step towards maturity –, one wonders if it is indeed the work of the Hispanic composer we are familiar with: only a few twists are sometimes reminiscent of the Iberian peninsula, and at first sight one would most likely associate this work to Schumann or Grieg! Back in the days, the composer was only starting to dabble in the infinite Spanish folkloric wealth that he would later on include more expertly into his music. This concerto can be considered as a transitional work. Even more uncommon still, the Concerto of Francisco Mignone (1897-1986), a Brazilian composer with Italian roots, is a small masterpiece written in 1958 in a language that could equally evoke menacing Amazonian rainforests, South American equivocal dances, or the “mechanical” savageries of Prokofiev! A work definitely worth discovering and that we’d love to hear in concert sometime soon! As a complement to the programme, Brazilian pianist Clelia Iruzun plays two of Albéniz’s most definitely Hispanic titles, and two of Mignone’s Valsas de esquina (Street Corner Waltzes written in a particularly strong Brazilian style between 1938 and 1943). Definitely worth a listen! © SM/Qobuz
