Active in Naples at the start of the 18th century, Giuseppe Porsile composed cantatas, some of which have the particularity of having sections that need to be played by a solo flute. At the time, the instrument, soon to be superseded by the transverse flute, is still in the form of the recorder. This was enough to pique the interest of Inês d’Avena, musician and researcher who carefully looks into and uncovers various pieces composed for her instrument in baroque Italy of the years 1720-30. Indeed, some manuscripts have disappeared off the radar, taken away in diplomatic convoys amid exchanges between Italian and German courts. It’s wonderful that they are finally coming to light, full of colour, light and emotions. Inês d’Avena doesn’t shy away from questioning the authorship of the works: Qual per ignoto calle, attributed to Vivaldi, could well have been the product of Porsile’s writing.
At the head of her ensemble La Cicala and alongside Canadian soprano Stefanie True, Inês d’Avena gives expressive and zesty renditions of these pages of music, characteristic of the late baroque period in Naples. Romantic, sometimes tragic and admittedly slightly countryfied, these cantatas sometimes have the aura of being folkloric country songs, alternating between tuneful melodies and recitative songs; the flute dialogues with the voices with rich emulation. Inês d’Avena is one of these musicians who through her work passionately strives towards restoring the once-legendary status of the recorder (Alexis Kossenko is another) and its acolytes, from the archlute to the harpsichord, completing this most pleasing musical project. © Elsa Siffert/Qobuz

This was enough to pique the interest of Inês d’Avena, musician and researcher who carefully looks into and uncovers various pieces composed for her instrument in baroque Italy of the years 1720-30.
