A 1997 Naxos release featuring violinist Henning Kraggerud often serves as a standard for Grieg's violin sonatas, but these works, like so much of Grieg, are deeper than they appear on the surface and continue to attract new interpreters. The year 2020 has brought two new recordings, both by women, one by violinist Elena Urioste and pianist Tom Poster, and the present one by Eldbjørg Hemsing. The two versions are quite distinct in mood, and this fact alone testifies to the continuing interest of these works. Hemsing's is the more vigorous, although less playful, of the two readings, confidently striding through the outer movements and giving an impression of why Liszt, at first glance an unlikely admirer of Grieg, thought so highly of these works. The Beethovenian finale of the Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor is especially strong. The interpretation depends on the muscular contributions of pianist Simon Trpceski, and the performance as a whole has an attractive aspect of balancing two high-energy players. Another draw is the presence of a composition by Hemsing, a set of folk-song variations called Homecoming. This would have seemed natural to an audience of Grieg's time, and it winds down the program in a satisfying way. An added plus here is strong engineering from BIS, working in the Sendesaal in Bremen, Germany.
