Some scandalmongers have always seen Grant Green as some kind of “light” version of the untouchable Wes Montgomery. A very reductive description of this great guitarist, who may be less flamboyant and groundbreaking than his elder but is truly a virtuoso when it comes to smooth groove. During the 1960s, Green will pen with Blue Note, as a leader but also as a sideman, unique pieces with a blues soul. Jazz guitarists were rather rare at the time and the voice coming out of his ten fingers was rather original… Released during the spring of 2018, Funk In France: From Paris To Antibes (1969-1970) gathers a brand new collection of Green’s recordings when he came to the ORTF studios in Paris, on October 26, 1969. You will also find his concerts from June 18 and 20, 1970 at the jazz festival in Antibes with drummer Billy Wilson, saxophonist Claude Bartee and organist Clarence Palmer, the latter two having also performed on the famous Green Carryin’ On, released in 1969 by Blue Note. The ORTF session was produced by André Francis and the recordings from Antibes have been made even before the first official live release of the guitarist (Alive!, still with Blue Note). Two hours from a mature musician who never falls into the trap of one too many notes and offers highly sophisticated improvisations. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
