This release by youthful violinist Sophie Wang and pianist Florian Glemser purports to be an exploration of the Schumann circle in the mid-1850s, including not only Robert and Clara Schumann but also the young Brahms and Schumann's student Albert Dietrich, both of whom show up on the program here in the rarely recorded "F-A-E Sonata". It's unclear whether Wang and Glemser have specific insights into the creative atmosphere of the group. Clara Schumann gets top billing but is represented only by a single set of short pieces, the Three Romances for violin and piano, Op. 22. The program concludes with the Variations on The Last Rose (it is The Last Rose of Summer that is meant) by Heinrich Wilhelm Ernest, who had little to do with Schumann; a work by Joseph Joachim, who had more, and who was the dedicatee of the "F-A-E Sonata," would have rounded things off better. Still, Wang gives clean performances of music that is not, apart from Robert Schumann's Violin Sonata No. 1 in A minor, Op. 105, terribly often heard. Clara Schumann's Romances are among her strongest works and might easily be taken for Robert's music. Robert's own set of Three Romances, Op. 94, seem to show him aiming for a new simplicity akin to what's found in some of late Beethoven, while the "F-A-E Sonata," with two movements by Robert Schumann, one by Brahms, and one by Dietrich, is a one-of-a-kind experiment. This recording may fill holes in some libraries of 19th century music.
