Of Anton Bruckner's mature symphonies, the Symphony No. 6 in A major is seriously underrated and often overlooked, perhaps because little historical controversy surrounds it. Unlike most of Bruckner's other symphonies, the Sixth was not heavily revised by the composer nor edited by well-meaning followers, and the relative lack of enormous, organ-like sonorities and long dramatic pauses makes it less recognizably Brucknerian. Yet this misfit is a coherent and organic symphony in the tradition of Beethoven and Schubert, replete with compelling melodies, propulsive motives, innovative modulations, and subtle harmonies, and students of Bruckner's music can find much originality and emotional depth in this work. Bernard Haitink and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra deliver an energetic and finely detailed performance that makes a strong case for the Sixth and reveals its inner workings with clarity, while demonstrating a strong sympathy for Bruckner's expressions, which gives the music great warmth and richness. BR Klassik has recorded this live performance with remarkably transparent sound and a wide dynamic range, so the audio resembles a studio recording with high standards and almost no extraneous noise.
