Given the aesthetic conventions that prevailed in the 1960s, in the days of Karl Münchinger, Kurt Redel and Karl Ristenpart, it takes a certain amount of courage to record Bach’s music today with a large, modern orchestra.

The most astonishing thing about this concert version of the First Suite (Overture), BWV 1066, is that Giovanni Antonini, the founder and tireless leader of the baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, seems to follow the traditional style of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra (Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks) without wanting to impose his own design on it.

This recording, done in 2018 in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence, will delight nostalgic listeners and surprise a generation of music lovers accustomed solely to "historically informed" recordings. It is a reversal of values that proves once again the universality and timelessness of Bach's music, which remains unaffected by trends and listening habits. © François Hudry/Qobuz
