This recording, conducted by the composer and recorded live with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will satisfy both longtime Thomas Adès fans and newcomers. Both works included are world premieres, and they show Adès both writing as well as he ever has and breaking new ground. Totentanz (2013) is Adès in his classic vein, brassy, tense, and a bit grim. It's a cantata for two soloists and orchestra, in German, with a text taken from a 15th century artwork in Lübeck, Germany's Marienkirche. The work shows Death in conversation with a parade of types, from the Pope and Kaiser through Cardinal, King, Monk, Knight, Doctor, Salesman, Sexton, Craftsman, Farmer, Girl, and finally Baby. Death is sung by a baritone, and the other parts by mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotjin, who modulates her voice according to the various characters. The finale with the small child is extremely affecting. Even better, however, may be the Concerto for piano and orchestra (2018), in the traditional three-movement concerto form, yet not neoclassic music in the least. In some respects, Adès moves toward a public-friendly style, with hints of Gershwin, Ravel, and Stravinsky, but it's still pure Adès, with the rhythm constantly destabilizing itself and careering around corners at impossible speed. The piano part is highly virtuosic: Adès, a fine pianist himself, set challenges for his friend Kirill Gerstein which are admirably surmounted. The work is a great deal of fun and seems as likely as anything else written lately to enter the repertory permanently. Adès conducting, bringing into relief his unorthodox instrument combinations, is another major attraction. Bravo!
