Various performers have taken up the rhythmically kaleidoscopic music of 17th century Mexico, but this album from the Newberry Consort and EnsAmble Ad-Hoc does them one better in a way. The Newberry Consort was inspired to create the program after touring in Durango, Mexico, and observing the vital mix of cathedral and street music at Christmastime. The album was taken from a live concert that has been successful and presented multiple times, featuring slightly different music each time. Where this presentation expands upon earlier ones is that it offers a physical representation of the sacred-secular mix, with the female singers of the Newberry Consort behind a screen in the role of nuns, performing the sacred selections, while EnsAmble Ad-Hoc, in the role of a villancico group of the day, played front and center. The music of the latter group, especially, reflected the African influences in this repertory, and EnsAmble Ad-Hoc offers zippy and forceful rhythms. What makes this music so fascinating, though, is that the African rhythms found their way into the sacred music as well. The musicians forge consistently lively contrasts between the nuns and the village players, but it is not just a question of polyphony of the nuns vs. rhythm of the street musicians. Listen to the segue from the Galician-language Si al nacer o miniño of Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla to Gaspar Fernandes' humorous Dame albriçias, mano Anton (Negrito) and the blazing Cumbé of Santiago de Murcia, the Spanish composer who did the most to explore the African element. Other groups, including those of Jordi Savall, have offered cleaner readings of this repertory, and the live church sound is harsh at times, but there is a very attractive energy here, reflected in the final Convidando está la noche of Juan García de Zéspedes, where all of the performers join forces and are rewarded with enthusiastic cheers as a piñata is passed out into the audience. It may be that this recording comes closest to how the music sounded in 17th century Mexico, and it is a great deal of fun. It's one of the most genuinely joyous of 2021's group of Christmas releases.
