About Playlist

From writing some of the most iconic hits of the 1960s—including "The Loco-Motion," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" and "Up On the Roof"—with her then-husband, Gerry Goffin, to reinventing herself as a feminist singer-songwriter in the early '70s, Carole King is woven into the fabric of American pop music. Make that the world's pop music: It’s been said that Lennon and McCartney wanted to model themselves after Goffin and King. You could say she seemed to always be in the right place at the right time, be it New York City’s Brill Building or the Los Angeles canyon scene that birthed the 1970s' singer-songwriter movement; but it’s more apt to say that King helped make those places magical. Her landmark album Tapestry, which turns 50 in 2021, cemented her royal status as a solo artist, selling more than 25 million copies worldwide. She’s also never shied away from "covering" her own songs made famous by others (or, in the case of Aretha Franklin's version of "...Natural Woman," iconic), imbuing them with her own free-wheeling spirit. Here, a playlist of King owning her songs.
