About Playlist

The sound system culture develops in Jamaica as soon as the end of the 1950s: impromptu evenings in the street where artists set up their handmade sound systems to make the crowds dance. Dub was born during these evenings, from live remixes of instrumental pieces, before being brought back into the studio by the technicians from Kingston, King Tubby et Lee Perry, which would make of it a genre in its own right. Dub will afterwards get an impressive echo in Europe through electro producers.

Trojan: 50 Years of Digging Reggae

by Smaël Bouaici

Once past the Bob Marley tree, many reggae fans discovered the depth and diversity of the Jamaican music forest through the compilations of Trojan Records, some of which became true Proust madeleines. For the occasion of the label's 50th birthday, Qobuz looks back over the fluctuating trajectory of the label, together with Laurence Cane-Honeysett, curator of Trojan Records and author of the book The Story of Trojan Records.

The black hole before the revival

Trojan then entered a dark period. Marcel Rodd, the owner of Saga Records, that essentially reissues classical music and a little jazz, had no interest in this huge catalogue. "Marcel Rodd bought Trojan for his distribution network. He knew nothing about reggae and he had a lot of difficulty running the label. Finally, he hired people to help him, but Trojan's image suffered a lot." Especially since Saga Records had not taken over Trojan's debts, making a lot of the artists angry when they didn’t see the money coming in. The problem was that the agreement was biased from the beginning; it specified that Trojan had to pay only the Jamaican producers, who in turn were supposed to pay the artists. And even if there was a decision made to grant 50% of the royalties to the artists, some still haven’t signed a new contract!

Approached by Marcel Rodd, reggae photographer and historian Dave Hendley plunged back into the catalogue and put together some compilations, highlighting new talents like Prince Jammy, Sugar Minott, Linval Thompson or Mikey Dread. Trojan also benefited from the ska revival in 1979 but with Island putting all their weight on reggae with Bob Marley and Virgin launching the Frontline sub-label in 1978 (signing major bands like the Abyssinians, the Gladiators or Culture) the task proved complicated, especially with little support from shareholders. It finished with Trojan being sold to Colin Newman, an accountant and record collector, in 1985. Newman had the bright idea to use Steve Barrow’s services, the future founder of the hugely respected label Blood & Fire. The duo then launched a series of compilations with Barrow's wonderful cover notes and installed Trojan as a leading re-release label for reggae.

Steve Barrow, who also worked freelance with Island, left Trojan in 1992 to create Blood & Fire and Laurence Cane-Honeysett took over, launching the mythical thematic compilation series, Trojan Box Set. A symbol of the label for contemporary reggae lovers, the first volume of the series was released in 1998 - the Trojan Ska Box Set - followed the same year by the Dub Box Set, Rocksteady Box Set and DJ Box Set. It was a first salvo which demonstrated the label’s desire to utilize its extensive catalogue to recount in song Jamaica’s cultural history. Sold in 2001 to Sanctuary Records, bought by Universal in 2007 and sold again in 2013 to BMG-Sony (a requirement of the European Commission to validate the acquisition of EMI), Trojan celebrates its 50th anniversary this year with this very dense anniversary box set, which was a real challenge for Laurence Cane-Honeysett: "We first had to include all the hits that marked the history of Trojan, but also songs that were never published or re-released. There were over 70 tracks that met this criterion! In addition to that, we wanted all genres of Jamaican music to be represented, including all the best-known artists and all the sub-labels." The solution to this puzzle? A series of six double and triple albums, a collector's box containing 6 CDs, a book entitled ‘The Story of Trojan Records’ written by Laurence Cane-Honeysett with hundreds of photographs, record sleeves and archive material, and a documentary called Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Records... In short, it’s a real reggae orgy which doesn’t look like its stopping any time soon, especially as Trojan has just put a coin back in the machine by announcing the first release of the label Trojan Reloaded, which will publish new artists for the first time in twenty-five years.
