One of the great drummers in the history of jazz (and an admirable pianist, too), Jack DeJohnette received encouragement from Muhal Richard Abrams in the earliest days of the AACM (a period later celebrated in DeJohnette’s “Made In Chicago” project), and went on to work with most of the major figures in the music. He played with Keith Jarrett in Charles Lloyd’s group and Miles Davis’s, and made his ECM debut in a duo recording with Jarrett (“Ruta and Daitya”). Their association was revived in the 1980s in Jarrett’s enormously popular “Standards” trio. Jack’s own groups have showcased many great players, from David Murray and Arthur Blythe to Ravi Coltrane. Other important alliances have included the Gateway trio with John Abercrombie and Dave Holland, and an ongoing association with John Surman.
