A pioneer of the strange, avant-garde and of the unknown, the wonderfully different roster at Erased Tapes Records has helped solidify their spot at the indie-label table.

Founded in 2007 by sonic architect and explorer Robert Raths, Erased Tapes has become one of the most significant independent record labels of the last ten years. The London-based label aims to nurture and support genre-defying artists whose ethos is fully grounded in promoting the avant-garde.

Erased Tapes are well known for their attention to detail when it comes to sonic and visual aesthetics, this is why so many contemporary artists feel at home with the label. Their roster includes artists such as German composer Nils Frahm, Iceland’s Ólafur Arnalds, American multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick, English film composer Michael Price and electronic artist Rival Consoles, among many others.

Recent Releases:

Nils Frahm - Graz (2021)

Nils Frahm, also known as the creator of Piano Day, treated fans this year with a surprising new album made up of archived music recorded at MUMUTH, The University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, which he recorded all the way back in 2009. This offers the listener a glimpse into Frahm’s early period when he was still self-producing his albums. Back then, the famous “Frahm sound” of wedging felt between the strings and hammers of his piano (which would be later heard on Felt) did not exist. The picture of Frahm that you get from these nine tracks could be described as raw, however still as stunning as ever.

Rival Consoles - Articulation (2020)

After being the very first release at Erased Tapes, Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles, has paved the way for melancholic, ambient and spatial electronica. Articulation is the artist’s seventh album and West quite literally went back to the drawing board for this album, using pen and paper to draw musical structure. West says, “With a pen and paper sketch you can compose and rethink ideas without technology getting in the way, so for me it acts as a very helpful tool to refresh the process.” This album, which is a journey in itself, further cemented Erased Tapes as the centre for avant-garde electronica.
