Travels with Koze!

Stefan Kozalla, also known as DJ Koze, did not make it big in the conventional way, and that can only be a good thing for us! It is difficult to classify Koze’s place within the vast family of electronic music, and the German DJ has a lot of fun on his tasty mix for the DJ Kicks series, which appeared a few weeks ago. We know that this Teutonic soundshaper is able to move from minimal techno to psychedelic rock, whilst taking in deep house, world music and hip hop, in an instant. His DJ Kicks mix confirms this impression, shooting off into many bold, disparate directions. Koze’s remixes take in experimental (cLOUDDEAD, Boards of Canada), rap (Madlib and Freddie Gibbs), ambient (Daniel Lanois), club (the excellent The 2 Bears), and more … A strength is also found in the sequencing of this eclectic record. In the hands of a lesser talent, the result would have disorientated. With Koze, everything appears obvious and clear. His DJ Kicks mix is, once again, of the very highest class.
