The Britpop figurehead is back in the guise of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds with the new album Chasing Yesterday

It seems hard to believe that it's been twenty years since Noel Gallagher had his first Number 1 with Oasis' single Some Might Say in 1995, yet here he is in 2015 with his second solo record, Chasing Yesterday. The album has been underway since 2013, when Gallagher dispelled the persistent rumours of an Oasis reunion and revealed he was working on what he considered to be some of the "best songs" he'd ever written for his solo project, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, which also includes Oasis session pianist Mike Rowe, drummer Jeremy Stacey of The Lemon Trees, The Zutons bassist Russell Pritchard and guitarist Tim Smith. The title of the album alludes to the past, and there are definitely hints of the heady days of Britpop in arena ballads The Girl With X-Ray Eyes and The Dying Of The Light; but Gallagher is also unafraid to try something new, even throwing in a sax solo in Riverman. It seems unlikely that Noel Gallagher will ever escape Oasis' legacy, but if Chasing Yesterday is any indication, his solo career is set to have a healthy future of its own.
