A genius saboteur, the expansive Anton Newcombe is back for his 17th album with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, his inexhaustible, constantly resisting and reforming portmanteau-titled band. Except for the extreme simplicity of its blank cover, the formula hasn’t changed much since Don't Get Lost, released in February 2017.
While the competition in the psychedelic rock scene is growing more ferocious, headed by the young and violent Australians King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, TBJM are perpetuating their strange singularity, based on nonchalance and bittersweet elegance. Expeditious at less than 40 minutes long, Something Else relies on never-ending hypnotic, slow and contemplative rhythms (My Love, Silent Stream), inherited from shaman Newcombe’s meditations, while keeping some spirited rock digressions (Who Dreams Of Cats, Fragmentations). The man is definitely not dead yet!
