In June 2020, Cro-Mags, then just back from the dead, released the album In the Beginning after 20 years of silence.

Contacted during the promotion of this unexpected album, Harley Flanagan (vocals, bass, and undisputed leader of the group) confessed to us that he had been pacing like a lion in a cage in lockdown and already had the equivalent of two albums in reserve. Less than six months later, we have reason to believe his promises, as the six tracks of the EP 2020 are indeed here, all brand-new, with no filler. Certainly, this release doesn't offer much in the way of novelty, because we are on familiar ground here: hardcore tinged metal governs the six titles of this rather predictable piece, and yet... how do you say? That American expression, erm... There’s "more than meets the eye." That's it!

CRO-MAGS - 2020 (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

Arising Empire

The Cro-Mags have experienced some monumental lows and now seem totally out of the doldrums. With this incredible groove tied to their seminal hardcore sound, the gang fears nothing and no one: as proof, see Violence and Destruction, a worthy companion to Bad Brains and Suicidal Tendencies. Crofusion, which closes us out, reminds us that Flanagan is a bassist (and an amazing singer!) who has no need for lessons from anyone. And good for him: the dynamo who would do anything to win recognition for his talents has clearly succeeded at last. Was there any need to release an EP? That's not clear. An album released on the heels of the last one would have been a good choice. But... The Cro-Mags are still the Cro-Mags, no matter what. The slap to the face is still there. More is better than less, and for now, this mini album is nothing to be ashamed of. All hail Harley!
