Passacaille

The Belgian label Passacaille, founded in 1995, was originally intended as a platform for important Belgian musicians active in the field of historically informed practice. The Baroque ensemble Il Fondamento under Paul Dombrecht and the pianoforte specialist Jan Vermeulen became the first artists of the young label. Other renowned musicians, such as Wieland Kuijken and the Octophoros ensemble, followed suit.

Soon the label attracted international prizes, and it was then decided to open the label to non-Belgian artists and ensembles. As a result, in 2000  Passacaille started working with artists from several European and American countries.
The label also started a programme with the finalists of the Antwerp music competitions to produce a well received series of recordings of young ensembles, such as Liber Unusualis and The Halcyon Ensemble.

In 2006 the label was acquired by Belgian musicologist and traverso specialist Jan De Winne, who decided to further enlarge the circle of Passacaille musicians to artists of international renown, e.g. the Ensemble William Byrd under Graham O'Reilly, La Divina Armonia under Lorenzo Ghielmi or cornet specialist Bruce Dickey. Other newcomers of note are the Russian cellist Sergey Istomin, the Brasilian cembalist Nicolau de Figueiredo, and the famous Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov.

Passsacaille has recently released to international acclaim Haendel's organ concertos op. 4 superbly performed by La Divina Armonia with Lorenzo Ghielmi at the organ. While keeping the historically informed practice of ancient music remains as the focus of the recording programme, Jan De Winne intends to broaden its scope to include works later periods.
