The mid-20th century has a tragic and many-faceted story to tell where musicians from Europe, both Jewish and non-Jewish, are concerned. So many were either blacklisted, dismissed from their positions and forced into exile or transported to the camps and simply eliminated. Some, like Martinu, seemed unsettled wherever they were. He was blown hither and yon by events beyond his control but he managed to stay just one step ahead of the invaders, seeking a place where he and his wife could live well despite the war – and where he could work freely. This peripatetic existence was not eased by his difficult, possibly autistic, personality – but that did not prevent him from composing a vast and very successful amount of music in all genres, including an unusually large number of pieces for the cello. Some early sets of short pieces for cello and piano certainly helped him to gain an enormous confidence and facility in that combination so that, when he came to compose his three sonatas, all written for specific cellists, the music could be filled with technical, idiomatic brilliance. Seven Arabesques of 1931 display rhythmic quirkiness and repetition, an attractively dissonant color and an entertaining individuality while generally adopting a straightforward ABA design. Melody, mechanical quasi-minimalist repetition, complicated syncopation, jazz and bravura – they’re all here in generous helpings. © Nimbus

Kenneth Woods writes: “Given that this programme was to be an exploration of childhood, the obvious place to start is with birth. Richard Wagner wrote his Siegfried-Idyll as a birthday present for his wife, Cosima, just after the birth of their son, Siegfried. Nowhere else in music is there so tender an evocation of those fragile, precious and fraught first days and weeks of life. Engelbert Humperdinck’s great children’s opera, Hänsel und Gretel, a quasi-Wagnerian setting of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale, tells the story of two children in peril… Die Forelle is one of Schubert’s simplest and most popular songs, composed in 1817, when Schubert was just 20, to words by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart… Gustav Mahler’s 100-minute Third Symphony and his Fourth grew out of the musical material in the short, beautiful song which forms the final movement of the Fourth Symphony, Das himmlische Leben (“The Heavenly Life,”), and which concludes these "Visions of Childhood". First, however, we hear his song Das irdische Leben which forms a sort of bleak mirror image to that song. As with the Humperdinck, I have essentially stuck as closely as possible to Mahler’s own orchestration, which is a model of clarity and economy, but also full of extreme, even grotesque, colors. Finally, we come to another combination of song and variations by Schubert, both known as Der Tod und das Mädchen (“Death and the Maiden”). The song is based on a poem by Matthias Claudius and was written in 1817, the same year as “The Trout.” It has only two verses – one in which the Maiden pleads with Death to pass her by, and one in which Death assures her that he is a friend. © Nimbus

Just how many repertoires has Martin Jones recorded?! Focusing mainly on French and Spanish music and occasionally venturing to Latin-America, the pianist moves from Debussy and Guastavino to Mompou, Albéniz, Espla, Nin, Granados, Halffter, Falla, Roger-Ducasse, Saint-Saëns, and even further afield to Czerny, Szymanowski, Korngold, Stravinsky, Finzi and Hoddinott. Totalling almost five hours of music, these recordings feature almost all of Joaquín Turina’s piano works (born in Seville in 1882, died in Madrid in 1949) recorded at the Nimbus Foundation, not far from the town of Monmouth, Herefordshire, between March 1995 and August 2000. This album comes as part of a series of re-releases of the English pianist’s recordings by Nimbus to celebrate his 80th birthday. It provides a unique opportunity to rediscover a composer whose works were highly regarded by pianists such as Alicia de Larrocha, and yet seldom performed by younger generations of pianists, including those like Rodrigo. Unlike Falla, Joaquín Turina’s music was a subtle synthesis of the classical style that Enrique Granados developed to a high degree of perfection and the colourful flavours of Albéniz’s opus Iberia.
