After bursting onto the scene in 2013 with the brilliant WomanChild, Cécile McLorin Salvant raised the bar two years later with For One To Love, an even more impressive and complete album on which her voice worked wonders, and the more traditional Dreams & Daggers, recorded live at the Village Vanguard and the DiMenna Center with her faithful trio, the Quatuor Catalyst and the pianist Sullivan Fortner. She chose only to work with the latter of the two for her 2018 vintage album titled The Window.  Born on August 28th, 1989 in Miami, Florida, she studied French law, baroque and vocal jazz in Aix-en-Provence in France before winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2010 (at only 20 years old, in front of a panel of judges made up of Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin, Dianne Reeves and Kurt Elling!). For this album she decided on a vocal-piano duet. A baptism of fire which further demonstrates her astounding vocal ability. It is an album that also focuses on the complex nature of love through covers of songs by Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein and even Stevie Wonder. This is further proof that Cécile McLorin Salvant is anything but the cliché of a jazz singer, as trumpeter Wynton Marsalis puts it: “ You get a singer like this once in a generation or two…” © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

At the dawn of the 80’s you could say the Yellowjackets were the kings of the highway. Highway jazz to be precise. The type of Jazz fusion that one would’ve listened to in a Los Angeles traffic jam, wearing an Armani suit, with an oversized shirt, the window down, hair in the wind... Elevator music for their critics. Groovy, virtuoso, pop jazz for their fans. Like a very, very mainstream very, very smooth version of Weather Report... Three long decades later the Californian group have calmed it down a bit and have released some less built-up more acoustic jazz. Pianist and founder Russell Ferrante, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, drummer Will Kennedy and Australian virtuoso bassist Dane Alderson did not push the boundaries into a free and avant-garde style, but despite this the score for Raising Our Voice is an excellent one. The voice of Brazilian singer Luciana Souza on seven of the thirteen tracks also brings some originality to the album. The Yellowjackets stick with a smooth sound but never take the easy route. And just like in the 2016 album Cohearence, even if the melodies are very sensual, the improvisation remains, as always, very interesting. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz

With the help of the label Mack Avenue, Octave Music pursues its publishing of brand new or rare recordings from Erroll Garner, with this time a live at the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on November 7, 1964 called Nightconcert. Helped by Eddie Calhoun’s double bass and Kelly Martin’s drums, the pianists covers here gems drawn from the Great American Songbook. We may have heard a thousand times Over the Rainbow, Night And Day, My Funny Valentine, On Green Dolphin Street or Laura, we definitely enjoy them once again thanks to this jazz whose swing has been magnified. And as always with Garner, offering such a wide palette of colors with only three people is nothing short of a miracle. We go from a chamber intimacy to virtuoso fireworks, from stripped-down subtleties to rhythmic uppercuts. At the heart of this voluble and infectious swing, Garner fans will be happy to find here the rare That Amsterdam Swing… After The Complete Concert by the Sea in 2015 and Ready Take One in 2016, this is a third unmissable archive. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
