Around four hundred years ago, the region of Dithmarschen was a thriving centre of art and culture. This location was the starting point of the impressive career of Thomas Selle who was considered one of the major composers of his time alongside Schütz, Schein and Scheidt. Monika Mandelartz has devoted herself to an intensive study of the sources, examining, arranging, and recording works from the composer's early original manuscripts. The selected compositions have been recorded for the first time and provide a genuine enrichment to the repertoire. © Coviello Classics

It was a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions - the Thirty Years' War brought with it problems for those who had to experience it that seem unimaginable to us today. Not only the immediate violence of war, but also consequences such as looting, famine, epidemics and rape were the order of the day for almost everyone. The ensemble Paper Kite has set its sights on the impact of these traumas on the history of mentality and explored them from different perspectives in text and music. The textual sources are the diary of Abbot Maurus Friesenegger of Andechs and the notes of a simple mercenary. The psalm texts and poetry on which the music is based speak of the constant presence of death in the lives of people in the 17th century. All in all, a fascinating picture of this gloomy time emerges - and of the amazing human ability to still find something positive in all the misery. © Coviello Classics

The promise of fortune and the danger of doom are rarely as close as in gambling. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the fascination with challenging fate with cards, dice, or other gambling devices influenced by chance was particularly widespread. Russians were apparently particularly receptive to the dangerous charms: Alexander Pushkin's story Queen of Spades or Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel The Gambler bear witness to this as literary traces; with Piotr I. Tchaikovsky and Sergei Prokofiev, two prominent compatriots were inspired to compose. Igor Stravinsky's Jeu de cartes completes the playful compendium, which at the same time offers a fascinating view of the stylistic development from high romanticism to the special Russian style of modernism. Marcus Bosch and the Norddeutsche Philharmonie present all of this with sparkling brilliance - and, of course, with a great deal of joy in playing. © Coviello Classics

They offer such interesting blends of timbre that one wonders why they have become so rare on concert stages in the meantime: Songs that are accompanied not only by the piano, but also by another instrument. In order not to compete too much with solo singing, instruments in the middle voice ranges are suitable for these trio songs, such as viola or horn in this production. In the first half of the nineteenth century, the genre was so popular that even composer-celebrities such as Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms made individual contributions; but many were also written by little-known or even unknown colleagues, among whom there are many a hidden gems to be discovered. The quartet Burkhart / Koch / Lamotke / Kaldewei has recorded works by Frantisek Skroup, Wilhelm Kleinecke or Heinrich Proch for the first time and provides a real enrichment of the repertoire. © Coviello Classics

An “exemplary instrument” was the Dreymann organ built in 1837 in the St. Ignaz Church in the centre of Mainz. This was written by someone who should know: Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck, composer, organ virtuoso, author of an organ school and expert in the service of the Grand Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt, who commissioned the construction of the instrument. Unfortunately, the organ did not survive the centuries and wars unscathed; minor repairs were made again and again, but it was not until 2015 to 2019 that it was restored from the ground up. This inspired organ professor Gerhard Gnann from Mainz to embark on a project close to his heart: students are bringing the old sound back to life; he himself is also involved, of course. The chosen works were naturally obvious: they are all by the aforementioned Rinck, who, by the way, was born in the same year as Beethoven and is thus also a 250th anniversary of this year. His works at the transition from the late classical to the romantic period bring out the fine nuances of the organ’s timbres to best advantage. © Coviello Classics

Born in Danzig in 1626, Balthasar Erben was a cosmopolitan. When he applied for the position of Kapellmeister of the main church of St. Marien in his hometown at the age of 27, the council granted him a generous scholarship so that he could "look around the world and perfect himself as a composer". For five years, Erben traveled throughout Europe, visiting all the centres of musical culture of the time, including Rome. His compositional style, which was developed during this time, is correspondingly distinctive: a combination of different influences, cleverly interwoven. The Abendmusiken Basel offer an impressive collection of instrumental and sacred works by the composer who is unfortunately little known today. © Coviello Classics

Opera - Verschenen op 8 januari 2021 | Coviello Classics

Christoph Willibald Gluck was severely annoyed. He was now 60, and still had to deal with the same annoyances he had for decades: the turbulent life at the Paris Opera, for which he was always writing new stage works, the many rehearsals with petulant divas, the orchestra musicians, with whom Gluck was rarely satisfied. According to contemporary witnesses, he had to retire to the sickbed for a while due to exhaustion. Here he dreamt up a dream world: an opera radically freed of ballast, without ballet, without a large chorus, with only a few performers and a greatly reduced orchestra. Gluck himself did not live to see the realization of his dream; the Neue Nurnberger Ratsmusik has now brought it to life: a few singers each have to perform several roles, a narrator replaces the omitted recitatives and even some chorus numbers. Together with the slim ensemble, a prime example of focus achieved through slimming down is created. © Coviello Classics

In 1778 Mozart attested "the most wonderful effect" to the melodrama Medea (1775) of his contemporary Georg Anton Benda (1722-1795). Indeed, the combination of spoken texts with dramatic music unfolds a high emotional intensity here. Especially when a voice as incisive as that of the famous actress Katharina Thalbach breathes life into the text. The fast, delicate interplay of text and music makes it possible to develop a conflict-laden and contradictory character psychogram with an unusual presence. Marcus Bosch and the cappella aquileia accompany this new discovery of classical music theater with their usual precise and transparent sound. © Coviello Classics

Even in the 17th century critics called it a “forced art”, and indeed, even for many professionals today it is not easy to understand scordatura as an intuitive way of playing the violin. But when composers master the art of retuned strings to perfection, completely new sound experiences are possible. Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber was without doubt one of the greatest in this field, and so his seven sonatas recorded here really do offer “artful vocal harmonies”, as the Latin title promises. In each sonata, Biber prescribes different, sometimes considerably different, retunings – the result is sometimes considerably more, sometimes considerably less tension on the strings, which leads to a completely new tonal differentiation of the apparently so familiar string instruments. The ensemble "Der musikalische Garten"” presents this technically and musically perfect. © Coviello Classics

As is so often the case, Spain went its own way: the 19th century was characterised by music based on national traditions; in contrast to Central Europe, there were not so many great symphonies and operas but rather numerous songs with the classical accompanying instrument of the guitar. This, of course, says nothing about the compositional quality – two of the great exponents of Spanish music of that time, Enrique Granados and Manuel de Falla – who of course also composed symphonic music – served this genre with numerous treasures that perfectly combine folkloristic melodies and compositional sophistication. Her two cycles Doce tonadillas en estilo antiguo and Siete canciones populares españolas both show a very individual personal style, which inspires the world-famous and multiple award-winning soprano Núria Rial to a fascinating vocal cosmos off the beaten track. © Coviello Classics
