Chandos

Founded in 1979, Chandos is named after the first Duke of Chandos. The Duke was an aristocratic patron who supported Handel, amongst others. Following its namesake’s example, Chandos has worked tirelessly for over thirty years to protect and promote the neglected masterpieces of English music. The label has released the complete oeuvres and symphonies of Arnold Bax and Vaughan Williams, alongside rehabilitating the works of Gerald Finzi, Charles Stanford, Herbert Howells and William Alwyn. Chandos has specialized in the rediscovery of old repertoires; its label ‘Chaconne’ has begun editing unknown compositions by Leclair, Telemann, and, appropriately, Handel.

Convinced by these enduring artistic commitments, performers including Richard Hickox, Neeme Järvi, Vernon Handley, Bryden Thomson, Margaret Fingerhut and Charles Mackerras have worked with the English label. After a successful three decade history, Chandos can look to the future with confidence. Its digital platform, The Classical Shop, was released across Europe, offering an ample provision of legal classical downloads.
