The Breath

Alternative folk duo the Breath first burst onto the folk scene in 2016 with their emotional and intricately constructed debut album Carry Your Kin, an uplifting mix of ambient electronics and traditional folk that conjures images of Bert Jansch and Bat for Lashes. Hailing from Manchester, the duo -- vocalist/lyricist Ríoghnach Connolly and guitarist/songwriter Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra) -- first came together in 2010 after McCallum was looking for a vocalist to work with. Hitting it off over a shared love of music and ideas, the duo started recording sporadically over the next few years. After sending a demo to Peter Gabriel's Real World Records, the label gave the pair studio time to finish the album and issued Carry Your Kin in 2016. The duo headed out across the U.K. in support of its release at the end of the year, and festival dates followed in 2017. Having taken nearly six years to complete their first album, McCallum and Connolly opted for a quicker approach to their sophomore release. Recorded in just three studio sessions -- with John Ellis (piano), Sam Vickery (bass), and Luke Flowers (drums) -- the album saw the pair giving more space to their already multi-textured sound. The resulting Let the Cards Fall was released in September 2018.
