Ramin Bahrami

Pianist Ramin Bahrami has concentrated to an unusual degree in performance and on recordings on the music of a single composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. He plays Bach in a traditionally pianistic way, with little influence from the historical performance movement. Bahrami was born in Tehran in 1976. When he was five, his father was imprisoned and killed after the fall of the Shah of Iran to fundamentalist Islamic forces. He fled the country with his mother and brothers, landing in Italy. There he studied at the Milan Conservatory, at the Accademia Pianistica "Incontri col Maestro" in Imola, and then at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart, Germany, working there with Wolfgang Bloser. Bahrami took master classes with Alexis Weissenberg, András Schiff, and Rosalyn Tureck, the latter a Bach specialist who exerted a major influence. Bahrami paid tribute to her in 1999 in a multi-city concert presentation of an "Evening of Honor for Rosalyn Tureck." He made his debut at the Teatro Bellini in Catania, Italy, in 1998, touring Mexico later that year. His repertory is heavily oriented toward Bach, but he has also played music by Mozart and Beethoven, and repertory as far forward in time as Hans Werner Henze. Bahrami has played at many major concert halls in Italy and has mounted several tours, including one to Asia in 2018. He has written three books on Bach's music. Bahrami recorded Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, for the Decca label in 2004, and he has since remained exclusively associated with that label, except for a 13-CD box set of his work issued by Italy's Corriere della Serra newspaper: an indication of his popularity in that country. All of his albums on Decca have been devoted to Bach, including The Colours of Bach (2019). In 2020, he released a recording online of Domenico Scarlatti's Keyboard Sonata in D minor, K. 32, perhaps preparing for an album devoted to Scarlatti's sonatas.
