Hi-Res Booklet Onderscheidingen Diapason d'or - Gramophone Editor's Choice - Exceptional sound
After the volumes dedicated to Vivaldi's great instrumental cycles, La Stravaganza (2004), La Cetra (2012) and L’Estro armonico (2015), English violinist Rachel Podger continues her work with her Brecon Baroque ensemble to bring out this version of the Four Seasons, which is rounded off with three violin concertos. Brecon Baroque is an offshoot of the festival of the same name that takes place every year at the end of October, in Wales. A magical place at the confluence of two rivers, where the spectacular countryside draws visitors every year in their hundreds. A passionate fan of the music of Vivaldi and Biber, Rachel Podger, who studied in Germany, demonstrates through her performances just how much the Red Priest's music (and her herself, following Biber) can cloak itself in the mysterious and bizarre, to the point that Vivaldi appears here as a distant descendant of the mannerists from the late Renaissance and early Baroque period. This is a particularly interesting and successful take.

Hi-Res
Throughout her collaboration with Channel Classics, Rachel Podger has explored Johann Sebastian Bach’s works on numerous occasions, recording his Sonatas for Violin and Obbligato Harpsichord (with Trevor Pinnock), the complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, as well as many concertos with her ensemble, the Brecon Baroque. Today, she’s turning her attention to Cello Suites on her instrument, with magnificently accomplished versions. This act of transposing a piece to another instrument is quite common nowadays, as numerous lutenists or guitarists have already arranged their own versions of these suites as a whole or in part, and even Gustav Leonhardt recorded his own version of Suite for Solo Cello No.4 in E flat major, BWV 1010, for the label Seon in 1979. Bach himself had made a habit of recycling his older compositions for different instruments (Keyboard Concertos); in this regard, Rachel Podger’s work is very much in keeping with common practices during Bach’s lifetime. The British violinist masterfully gives these works a distinct dance flavour. Tempos are lively, phrasings are rich with emphasis. You’ll be immediately seduced by Cello Suite No.6, which was initially composed for a five-stringed cello: Podger chose to add a viola C string. Space expands, the bass is magnificent, high notes sound even brighter: highly addictive! © Qobuz
