Princess Nokia

Princess Nokia is the alias of rapper Destiny Frasqueri. The New York native's proud individualism is related in a confrontational, often humorous style across conceptually varied projects such as 1992 (2016), A Girl Cried Red (2018), and the simultaneously issued Everything Sucks and Everything Is Beautiful (2020), all of which were self-released. Before they named themself after a brand of phone made available to low-income earners in the U.S., Frasqueri went by the names Destiny and Wavy Spice, collaborated with the likes of Ratking, and became known for offhanded tracks such as "Bitch I'm Posh" and "Yaya." After label interest heightened their skepticism of the music industry, they changed their alias to Princess Nokia and built a fan base with the mixtapes Metallic Butterfly (2014) and Honeysuckle (2015), as well as an EP, 1992 (2016). A remastered and expanded edition of 1992, 1992 Deluxe (2017), arrived on the Rough Trade label almost exactly a year after the original edition, and registered on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. Frasqueri toured extensively -- including club and festival dates across Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Oceania, and the U.S. -- in support of the release. The following year, they issued the mixtape A Girl Cried Red, a cathartic synthesis of cloud rap and pop-punk. After some intermediary singles, they simultaneously issued Everything Sucks and Everything Is Beautiful (2020), half-hour LPs showcasing contrasting sides of their personality. Another single, "It's Not My Fault," appeared in early 2021. Songs with Baby Tate ("Boys Are from Mars") and Ashnikko ("Slumber Party") also came out during the year. Solo single "No Effort" was released in 2022.
