If Meyerbeer is better known these days for his four great French operas Robert le Diable (1831) Les Huguenots (1836), Le Prophète (1849) and L’Africaine (first performed 1865, one year after his death) – real building blocks of "Great French Opera" and triumphantly received in Paris – we forget that he started his career as a fellow traveler of Weber in Germany and then as a tympanist in Vienna (including, in 1813, for The Battle of Vittoria by Beethoven, under the composer's direction). But it was his first stay in Italy which would mark a turning-point in his life, as he fell under the spell of Rossini's music, with the result that his first operas followed Rossini's illustrious model. These would include Romilda e Costanza (1817), Semiramide riconosciuta and Emma di Resburgo (1819), before the current Margherita d'Anjou first performed at la Scala in Milan in 1820. He was met with immediate success, whether in the original versions or in French or German translation, in Munich, Barcelona, Paris, Brussels, London, Graz, Berlin, Budapest, Prague, Ljubljana, Amsterdam, Madrid, Lisbonne and La Haye. Buoyed by these triumphs, Meyerbeer – who by now had italianised his first name to Giacomo – headed for Paris where several of his great successes would be performed, including Margherita. We know how his flourishing career in Paris turned out. This is a recording of the first Italian version to be recorded (in public); the recitations are on the fortepiano, the excellent ensemble being entrusted to the baton of Fabio Luisi. The Italian, Rossinesque works of Meyerbeer's early maturity richly deserve rediscovery; he should certainly not be pigeonholed as simply a composer of Great French Operas! © SM/Qobuz
