Matthew Schellhorn

Matthew Schellhorn is a prominent English pianist specializing in music by Olivier Messiaen and in contemporary music. He is also an educator who is on the faculty at Cambridge University. Schellhorn was born on February 4, 1977, in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England. He attended Chetham's School of Music in Manchester and went on to Girton College, Cambridge. Among his primary teachers were David Hartigan, Maria Curcio, and Messiaen's second wife, Yvonne Loriod; later, he would contribute an article on Loriod to a book of Messiaen essays. Schellhorn's album debut came with an appearance on the Signum Classics release Messiaen: Chamber Music in 2008, with the Soloists of the Philharmonia Orchestra. That album included the Quatuor pour la fin du temps and, in addition to solo performances and recordings, Schellhorn has been an enthusiastic chamber music player, appearing among others with the Carducci, Fitzwilliam, and RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartets. He has also backed singers, and he appeared as an accompanist on the album Outside by violinist Aisha Orazbayeva. Schellhorn's debut solo release, Ian Wilson: Stations, appeared in 2014 on the Diatribe label; the pianist introduced the album with a fundraising concert for Christians in the Middle East. Schellhorn has played concertos under many conductors, including Baldur Brönnimann, David Brophy, and Stephen Cleobury. In addition to Messiaen, his work has featured contemporary music; he has commissioned more than 140 solo and chamber works and given many world premieres of works by such composers as Wilson, Nicola LeFanu, and Gráinne Mulvey. Schellhorn has been heard on BBC Radio 3 and Radio France. He is also a scholar who has written on Stravinsky's influence on Messiaen. In 2017, Schellhorn backed soprano Susanna Fairbairn on a Naxos album of songs by Geoffrey Bush and Joseph Horovitz. He returned on Naxos in 2020 and 2022 with two volumes of piano music by Herbert Howells.
