Available languages: EnglishJan Willem de Vriend is a Dutch conductor and violinist, primarily known for leading the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and founding the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam. De Vriend is associated with the movement for historically informed performances, and his work with the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam has led to revivals of obscure operas by Rameau, Heinichen, and Haydn, as well as performances of familiar Classical and Romantic operas. With the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, de Vriend has performed 18th and 19th century music, often using period instruments and creating a distinctive ensemble sound in repertoire from Mozart to Mahler. In addition to his duties as chief conductor and artistic director of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, de Vriend has also conducted the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hague Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Brabant Orchestra. He retired from conducting the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam in 2013.
