Jam Hsiao

Mandopop mainstay and Taiwanese singer and actor Jam Hsiao has been known to infuse his tender balladry with a heady dose of rock 'n' roll energy. Born Hsiao Ching-teng in Hualien City on 30 March 1987, he gained prominence in the mid-'00s after appearing on the first season of China Television (CTV)'s talent show One Million Star, which led to a contract with Warner Music Taiwan the following year. His debut album, Jam Hsiao, also arrived in 2008 and went to number one in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, also landing him a Best New Singer nomination at Taiwan's 20th Golden Music Awards the following year. He gathered even more national momentum with his second album Princess (2009), which clung to the top spot in Taiwan for an impressive three months and spawned a hit in "Say a lil Something," which was named one of the Songs of the Year at the 2010 Metro Radio Mandarin Music Awards. He continued to experience success with the release of subsequent albums Love Moments (2009) and Jam Wild Dreams (2011), both self-produced chart-toppers. In 2011, he landed the lead role in the action film The Killer Who Never Kills and picked up the Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Performer. Released in 2013, It's All About Love won him Best Male Vocalist at the 24th Golden Melody Awards and he continued to put out solo material before joining Taiwanese rockers Lion as a singer-songwriter and keyboard player in 2015. The group finished third on Chinese television series Singer in 2017, with Jam Hsiao returning as a solo singer three years later and also finishing third. His ninth album, Reflection of Desire, was released in the summer of 2018 and included a collaboration with Yoga Lin, with whom he had previously collaborated in 2009. In 2021, he dropped a COVID-19-themed, funked-up pop-tinted album, Quarantine 2827 Hotel Room, which takes its name from the hotel room he was forced to quarantine in due to work. A loungey new single, "My Tiffany," was issued in 2022.
