Howard Griffiths

Howard Griffiths is a British conductor. He studied at the Royal College of Music in London, and since 1981, he has been based in Switzerland. He was principal guest conductor of the Oxford Orchestra da Camera from 1994 to 1997, and he has often performed with the English Chamber Orchestra and the Northern Sinfonia of England. He has also guest conducted many orchestras around the world, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Tapiola Sinfonietta, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Montpellier, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the London Mozart Players, the Orquesta Nacional de España, the Slovakian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Polish Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester. In contemporary music, he has led many performances with the Collegium Novum Zürich, including pieces by Hans Werner Henze, George Crumb, Sofia Gubaidulina, Mauricio Kagel, and Arvo Pärt. However, Griffiths may be best known for his recordings of 18th and early 19th century symphonies and concertos, which he has recorded on CPO. Additionally, he has recorded for Novalis, Koch Schwann, Gallo, and Sony Classical.
