Goran Filipec

The Croatian pianist Goran Filipec has specialized in the virtuoso repertory of Liszt and other Romantic composers. His concert career has been international, stretching from the Western hemisphere to Japan, and his recording catalog has grown rapidly in the late 2010s. Filipec was born in Rijeka, then part of Yugoslavia, in 1981. He studied piano at the Ino Mirkovic Academy with Marina Ambokadze and Evgeny Zarafiants, moving on to the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, Germany, the Oxana Yablonskaya Piano Institute in Lugano, Switzerland, the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow, and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Netherlands. After this top-notch education he scored top prizes at the Gabala International Piano Competition in Azerbaijan and the José Iturbi International Piano Competition in Los Angeles in 2009, the Concurso de Parnassos in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2010, and the Concorso Pianistico Internazionale Franz Liszt in Parma, Italy, in 2011. Filipec has stated, however, that "Apart from a few interesting meetings which occurred during these competitions, I cannot remember of anything that would have contributed to my playing." More important, he said, were concerts, which began to come his way in Europe, North America, and beyond. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Philharmonie in Paris, and the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest. Filipec made his recording debut in 2006 with an album devoted to piano music of Rachmaninov and Mussorgsky, on the Eroica label. Since then he has recorded mostly for Grand Piano and Naxos, with albums devoted not only to Liszt and Scarlatti but to Croatian composers Ivo Macek and Blagoje Bersa. On a 2018 release, Filipec joined conductor Álvaro Cassuto and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for a Naxos recording of the Piano Concerto by Portuguese composer Joly Braga Santos.
