Findlay Brown

A British-born/Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter with a penchant for rootsy, alternative country-infused balladry with a psychedelic twist, Findlay Brown emerged in 2007 with the bucolic Separated by the Sea. He added elements of minimalist and African music to his sonic repertoire on the acclaimed Slow Light (2015) and Not Everything Beautiful Is Good (2018), both of which were released via Nettwerk. Findlay Brown spent his formative years bare-knuckle fighting in the East Ridings region of Yorkshire. A chance encounter with a Jimi Hendrix record eventually turned the jail-bound youth from brawler to musician, and upon relocating to York, Brown became immersed in the local music scene. Financially destitute, the newly minted artist sold the Beatles autographs his grandfather had given him, bought himself a guitar, and eventually moved to London to pursue a solo career. Brown’s unique blend of psychedelic rock and alternative country soon caught the ear of London-based record label All Good Things, which released his debut single, "Down Among the Dead Men," in May 2006. That same year he signed to Peacefrog Records and released the Losing the Will to Survive EP, followed by the full-length Separated by the Sea in 2007. Produced by Suede's Bernard Butler, his U.S. debut, Love Will Find You, arrived in 2009 on the Verve Forecast label. Taking a more pastoral approach, Brown's third outing, 2015's Slow Light, was influenced by composers like Philip Glass and Terry Riley, blending new sonic landscapes into his gentle folk songs. Having moved on from Brooklyn, New York, where he'd been living for some time, Brown settled in rural Denmark outside of Copenhagen, where he broadened his more meditative tone on 2018's Not Everything Beautiful Is Good. He continued to explore dusty '70s folk and cinematic chamber pop on 2021's Being Young Is Getting Old.
