Charlotte de Rothschild

The British soprano Charlotte de Rothschild has sung mainstream operatic and oratorio repertory but has specialized in unusual thematic programs, one of them dealing with her own family: the Rothschild banking dynasty. The daughter of Edmund Leopold de Rothschild and Elizabeth Edith Lentner Rothschild, Charlotte Henriette de Rothschild was born November 28, 1955, and raised at the Exbury Gardens estate in Hampshire, England. A rhododendron cultivated there is named for her. She studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum and at the Royal College of Music in London. Among Rothschild's oratorio credits are appearances with the Bach Choir under David Willcocks. A substantial part of Rothschild's performing career has been spent in Japan, where she recorded Rossini's Petite Messe Solonelle; she has also recorded several albums of Japanese songs, in most cases becoming the first foreign singer to record them. Her singing was also featured in a documentary called Rothschild Passions on Japan's NHK television network. Rothschild has also created and widely performed two recital programs connected with her own family history. One, Family Connections, features songs composed by friends or teachers of Rothschild family members dating back two centuries. Another, The Songs of Mathilde de Rothschild, features songs by Charlotte's own ancestor, a pupil of Chopin; Rothschild, aided by musicologist Philip Gossett, unearthed the songs through her own research and refined their presentation. She also issued a well-reviewed double album of Mathilde's songs on the Nimbus label in 2013. Rothschild has gone on to record many more albums for Nimbus, including recitals of music by Schumann and by several British composers, as well as other albums of Japanese-oriented material. In 2018, her album The Songs of Cyril Scott appeared on the Lyrita label. In the U.S., she has performed a program entitled Mirages: The Light and Life of John LaFarge Through Music at museum exhibitions devoted to that French-American artist.
